In 1961, Volvo gave the 120-series cars more power to cope with their heavyweight engineering. The B18 engine was a fresh design, which would soon earn a reputation for longevity. Sized at 1778cc, it provided the single carburettor 121 with 75 or 85bhp, while 122 cars, with their twin carburettors, enjoyed fruitier 90, 95 and 100bhp outputs. Even more power and performance was supplied courtesy of the B20 engine. This was a bored-out version of the B18 with a capacity of 1998cc, and resulted in the most powerful 120 of all, the 1968-1970 122S with 118bhp and 100mph potential.
