Thanks to their inherent strength and reliability, Amazons proved natural rally cars. To capitalise on this, Volvo gave the go-faster world of 1966 the 123GT. Its twin-carburettor 1778cc engine came from the more sporty 1800S coupé and it had servo-assisted front disc brakes and bumper-mounted spotlamps while, inside, the driver could revel in his special steering wheel and dash-mounted rev counter. Only available as a two-door, this Swedish grand tourer proved a potent tool. British tuner Ruddspeed offered a package to boost power to an entertaining 132bhp.
