1938 Wolsely 18/85

Another large pre-war Wolseley that re-emerged after the end of the war was the 18/85. Practically identical to the 14/60, it justified its higher price by having a bigger 2322cc six-cylinder engine. With 85bhp available, performance was good and it became well-known as a police car. A novel feature was the ‘Nightpass’ lights, an anti-dazzle, dipped head and driving lamp arrangement. The 18/85’s bulletproof reputation was well-justified; one managed to break the London to Cape Town record despite falling 30-foot off a bridge in the Congo. Now that’s build quality...
