The Italians have always been great at turning humdrum family saloons into great sporting coupés. So, when Alfa Romeo turned the rather good ‘Sud into a useable small sporting car, the results were predictably sparkling. Styling was handled by Giugiaro, and to many the Sprint successfully eclipsed the already desirable GTV. In twin-carb Veloce form the Sprint was very rapid indeed, but any example will reward the enthusiastic driver. An iffy 1980s facelift did it no favours, though, and fans prefer the crisp original.
