The definitive and most-loved Aston Martin shape was born with the DB4 of 1958. It was massively over-engineered with a hefty chassis and new all-alloy 240bhp dohc engine of three litres (but capable of being expanded well beyond this level if needed). But what really grabbed the headlines was the Superleggera body. Designed by Italian coachbuilder Tourer, its stunning lines were formed of aluminium panels laid over a frame of steel tubes, making the car strong but also lightweight. From 1958 to 1962, there were five series of DB4s.
