The Jaguar 420 was basically an S-type, with the 4.2-litre version of the XK engine fitted. The front end was completely restyled, previewing the upcoming XJ6 (as well as aping the 420G), and although it looked slightly unbalanced, there was no question over the way the 420 went. By the time of its launch in 1968, the Mk1/Mk2 platform had been stretched as far as possible in an attempt to maintain sales. The interior was further improved with the arrival of a padded fascia top, the first move towards the safety-led designs that followed.
