The 350SL was introduced as a replacement for the Pagoda 280SL, and once again both soft and hard tops were offered. There’s more than a passing resemblance between the two cars, but the 350SL’s body is three inches longer and 300lb heavier. That means much of the benefit of fitting a 3.5-litre V8 has been lost. Both cars share 0-60mph times, but the new car’s taller rear axle ratio, allowed by the V8’s extra torque, means it can pull a higher top speed. Not that they were supposed to be sporting cars, being aimed more at the luxury market.
