Pininfarina’s reputation for producing stylish convertibles and coupés from family cars arguably started here. The 403 Decapotable, to give the car its correct title, shared its wheelbase and running gear with the saloon, but looked a lot more appealing. First shown at the 1956 Paris Salon, it instantly found favour with buyers. The high-compression 1.5-litre engine gave reasonable performance, but this car was always about touring. Values continue to climb, despite (or due to?) endless reruns of TV’s Columbo – and appearances of his shabby, unkempt version.
