The best hot hatch ever? Volkswagen may have started the GTi craze in 1976, but many see the 205 as king of the breed. Initially only available with a 1.6-litre engine, in 1986 the 205 received the 130bhp 1905cc engine, instantly giving more rapid acceleration and a higher top speed – although it is still hotly-debated which is the better car. The 1.6 is slightly lighter, and better balanced, but the more powerful 1.9 is ultimately faster. Both variants had a reputation for lift-off oversteer – which is also what attracts many people to the model.
