Even though it was full of Peugeot 205 parts, PSA never intended to stick a Peugeot badge to the front of the 309. It started life as the Talbot Arizona – a Horizon replacement – but when PSA decided to kill the Talbot brand in 1985, Peugeot completed the project. The 309 GTi shortly followed, but, unlike the 205, it was only available as a 1.9. It featured uprated front and rear suspension, 15-inch Speedline alloy wheels, and a subtle bodykit. Peugeot only offered the car in three-door form to begin with, but the GTi was later sold as a five-door version as well.
