Drive System:

Conceived as a Spitfire GT, with the same four-cylinder running gear, it was quickly discovered that the extra weight of the fastback resulted in less performance. The solution was the six-cylinder Triumph 2000 engine, also creating an instant rival for the newly launched MGB GT. An E-type-like bonnet bulge completed the visual move upmarket. Great in a straight line, but that extra power highlights the deficiencies of the MkI’s swing-axle rear suspension. Lift-off oversteer means they must be driven with a modicum of respect. An improved system makes the MkII a much better car.
