A woefully under-rated sporting saloon that was a genuine BMW contender in its day, but has come to be overshadowed by the Sprint. In essence it’s a 1500TC fitted with an 1854cc version of the overhead-cam slant-four engine Triumph had been building for the Saab 99. Wishbone front suspension and live rear axle was all very conventional, but tightened up for the 1850 it created a sweet-handling and friendly machine that could be driven hard. Plusher 1850HL from 1976, and from 1973 all could be had with automatic transmission or manual with overdrive.
