The Beetle moved even further away from its pre-war origins in 1968 when more safety-conscious features were incorporated. Sloping headlamps were dispensed with in favour of upright ones and thicker bumpers fitted. Mechanical changes included – at last – 12-volt electrics and dual-circuit brakes, plus a fuel tank that didn’t have to be filled by via the front boot. There was less focus on the antiquated Beetle once VW’s new range of water-cooled cars but it lingered on, with minor improvements, until 1978. Building continued in Mexico until 2003.
