Volkswagen’s 1988 replacement for the Scirocco successfully updated its predecessor’s three-door hatchback style with a brooding and imposing persona. Closely related to the Golf Mk2, it debuted with a 1781cc engine. Topping the range initially was the G60, a supercharged monster of 158bhp that took just 7.8 seconds to reach 60mph and ultimately reached 140mph. And then came the VR6 version, a 187bhp fire-breather that encroached on supercar territory, with a maximum speed of 143mph and the dash from zero to 60 taking a mere 6.2 seconds.
