Customers might have thought the blistering Corrado G60 was enough. Volkswagen obviously didn’t though. So, in 1991, their high performance hatchback coupe benefitted even more from the new VR6 engine, displacing 2861cc. This 187bhp fire-breather returned numbers which encroached on traditional supercar territory, with a maximum speed of 143mph and the dash from zero to 60 taking a mere 6.2 seconds. That was faster acceleration than a contemporary Aston Martin Virage...and all this through the front wheels too! At the end of the Corrado’s life, in 1995, the limited edition VR6 Storm was marketed in the UK only, with many optional extras. Today the VR6 is a certified modern classic.
