One of the most intriguing of all Volvos appeared in 1971, with the 1800ES. Cast in the mould of Reliant’s Scimitar GTE, this was the 1800 given an estate rear as a way of updating its dated appearance for the 1970s. It was a gamble that worked, for this idiosyncratic load-lugger proved very popular, despite its nickname of ‘Snow White’s hearse.’ The 130bhp fuel-injected engine still gave good performance – 115mph was possible for the antiques dealer or heavy shopper in a hurry – while the trademark large glass frameless hatchback was a theme that Volvo would return to again...
