1953 Bristol 404

Essentially, the 404 was a short-wheelbase Arnold-Bristol chassis married to an exquisitely styled two-door coupé bodyshell. But it was not without problems. There was the small issue of price (it cost twice as much as a Jaguar XK120) and a lack of ultimate power compared with its Coventry rival. There were problems with the construction, too. The aluminium body and a pitch pine chassis frame have caused problems with owners in later years. But for all its problems, the 404, in looks at least, allowed it to break away from its Teutonic forbears.
