The revival of that legendary GTO badge on a car whose looks obviously derive from the ageing 308 GTB could easily have been a travesty. It wasn’t. Let’s start with the lightweight glassfibre and Kevlar bodyshell, on a revised chassis with four inches more wheelbase than the 308. That was done to accommodate longitudinal mounting of the twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre engine. The result is electrifying performance that helped make the GTO an almost instant collector’s item.
