1976 Vauxhall Chevette 2300HS

The Chevette, of course, was pure family car. The HS and HSR versions were very different beasts though. Built for rally homologation purposes, road versions went on sale in 1978, equipped with a 2279cc twin-cam engine and Getrag five-speed transmission. With 135bhp on tap and the potential for 120mph, this put it head-to-head with Ford’s RS Escorts. Front and rear spoilers and wide alloy wheels marked it out from the Chevette herd. The HSR Evolution in 1979 went the whole hog with flared wheelarches and a bodykit, plus 150bhp. Double the prices shown for one of those.
