Often overlooked in VW history, the K70 remains significant in Volkswagen’s history for being its first FWD car – even if it was going to be an NSU. The boxy saloon was designed to be the Ro80’s smaller brother, but weeks before its launch, VW pulled the plug on NSU, and took the car for itself. The fact that Wolfsburg desperately needed a new generation of models to replace the Beetle-derived cars had absolutely nothing to do with its decision… In the marketplace, it was a poor seller, but as a classic, the K70 has picked up a small but enthusiastic following.
