The Audi quattro was supposed to fade quietly out of production in 1988. However massive demand – especially from the UK – ensured that the old favourite remained in production long after the 80/90/Coupé that it was derived from had disappeared from the scene. To celebrate its stay of execution, Audi shoehorned in the 20-valve five cylinder engine from the Audi 200 and upped the output to a more than useful 220bhp. Of all the quattros, these last of line 20Vs are by far the best to drive, and quickest to boot.
