Just like an Austin Devon only larger (the easiest way to tell them apart is the Hampshire’s rear ‘skirts’). It’s a tall car, designed for people who wore hats, and you can seat three abreast on the front and rear seats, making it just the thing for those extended family trips to Goodwood. The 2.2-litre engine is an overhead-valve unit carried over from the Austin 16, strong on torque but short on gearing, so they fly up hills but run out of steam above 60mph. Probably as well – the steering’s not great and half-mechanical brakes need careful setting up.
