Originally a concept car created in conjunction with Autocar magazine, the 340R simply proved too good – and created too much interest – for it not to be built. Using the Elise’s aluminium chassis and all the best bits from sporty Elise variants, everything else – including much of the bodywork – was stripped away to create the purest driving experience possible. In combination with a 177bhp version of Rover’s K-Series engine, this added up to a power-to-weight ratio of 272bhp per tonne that many supercars fail to match. Fittingly, production was limited to 340 examples.
