The original Esprit was a standard-bearer, but it wasn’t without flaws. Cooling was marginal and the interior design lacked cohesiveness. In an attempt to put it right, Lotus quickly lauched the S2. It was marked out by minor modifications that included ‘ears’ behind the rear side windows to improve engine airflow, Speedline alloys and Rover SD1 taillights (to replace the X1/9 originals). For the final year of production, the S2 was fitted with the 2.2-litre engine, increasing performance and driveability at no cost in fuel consumption.
