Conclusive proof that sports cars can be front-wheel-drive as Lotus once again leads the pack in handling technology. Almost all the first batch were turbocharged SE versions, though some 130bhp non-turbo models were sold; all use a long-lived Isuzu 1600 engine that Lotus had helped to design. Sadly, Lotus were losing money on every one of the 3855 Elans sold, so the plug was pulled after two years. When Bugatti bought Lotus in 1994 another run of 800 was made, using up spare engine stock and subtly improved. These were badged S2 and are more sought after today.
